The result of that activism, San Francisco's National Asian American Telecommunications Association , is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Thursday's kick-off of NAATA's 23rd San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival -- with its films and videos from around the world -- reflects the organization's transformative expansion from its original mission of getting Asian faces on public television, to nurturing a flowering of Asian American cinema and talent. Night Shyamalan and Gurinder Chadha were screened. Lee's latest, " Ethan Mao ," plays at the festival on Friday and Saturday, and opens in a commercial run April 8 at the Castro Theatre.

Hammad Rizvi is an award-winning writer and director from Austin, Texas. As a Pakistani-American raised in various parts of the world, his films often tackle topics that are as diverse as they are raw. Founded in , the San Francisco-based Center for Asian American Media, formerly known the National Asian American Telecommunications Association NAATA , has grown into the largest organization dedicated to the advancement of Asian Americans in independent media, specifically the areas of television and filmmaking. At the same time, CAAM also invested its resources into creating new work, especially for public broadcasting.
